About Fred Gerendasy

Work:

I’m a fine art photographer and my principle areas of interest entail nature, urban environments and old things found in their natural settings. I am also drawn to the unusual or mysterious. My work can be divided into two broad categories with some overlap between them: images intended for viewing on a screen and work made into archival pigment prints. The later (imo) is by far the more superior method of viewing finished work and only the best of my images I choose to make into lasting prints.

Artist

I attended photography school in college in the mid-70’s and became quite passionate about photography. Over the course of several years, I spent countless hours taking pictures, working in the darkroom in black and white to turn what I shot into something beautiful. While life ultimately took me in a different direction, throughout my life I continued taking pictures, focusing my camera not just on nature but also what I found around me.

Several years ago, my kids well grown, I turned my eye back to photography, back in a serious way. I learned how to use photoshop and I bought a professional printer and began making prints again. This time, to my utter joy, I saw how I could work in both black and white and full color with an incredible range of fine art papers to produce nice work. The only real limitation was me. And, so, I began, step by step relearning my craft, translating what I knew already in analog photography, figuring out how to work in digital and how to harness the power of digital to produce an image beyond anything I could do before.

Today, I embark on a new project, one that I have spent my entire life working on, without realizing it. The Wander Series is really a continuation of how I have stepped through my own life. I wander. I see. I evolve. The Wander Series is a way for me to develop and showcase my work that honors who I am and what I love most to do. I wander the city streets or wherever I happen to go, my iPhone at my side, and when I see something that excites my imagination (often, it’s more a gut feeling than anything cerebral), I take the picture. That becomes my first draft. Later, in my studio, I look over the images I shot and cull from them those that look most promising. For those I do edit in Photoshop, that’s where I pull out the magic. It can take hours and even days to apply final finishing to an image. Little details matter, greatly. For a photograph to have soul, to have life itself, there has to be a central focus to the image, like a fine painting, a direction for the eye to gravitate to, without thinking. A sense of light is obvious to note but it (usually) has to be represented (enhanced) in the image appropriately and not appear either contrived or insufficient. Talking about what makes a photograph great is akin to describing what makes a great joke or a great song, words alone may appear more trite than revealing.

And so, what makes a great photograph? That’s the question I ask myself everyday and to which I can only truthfully answer: I’m still working on it: here’s my latest work!
