Known as the “Jewel of the Mother Lode,” Sutter Creek, California, sits in the heart of gold country about 45 miles southeast of Sacramento. Its 1850s gold rush roots make it a rich vein to mine — the historic district offers visual links to the past that suit my photographic aesthetic. I’m drawn to the deep red of the brick against the peeling paint of the wooden wall vent. A sliver of wire runs across the frame, holding the harmony between brick, mortar, and the metal casing below.
