Sunrise At Maui’s Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory

$50$75

Almost like a moon landing site, within its immediate rock and sky surroundings, two people standing in the distance, one taking a picture of the other as a shadow is cast by the photographer who is an outside observer. It’s a bit surreal within a surreal environment. Ironic, this observatory is one of best places on earth to view the distant cosmos because of its high altitude and low light pollution at night,  yet its own immediate surroundings are so otherworldly.

Description

Being atop Maui’s Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site at sunrise is almost a mystical experience. Just getting up at 5am and packing into a van (pre-coffee) is itself a spiritual awakening— from sea level, the climb up a 2-lane road to the 10,000 foot volcano summit. According to Wikipedia, this research observatory is above one third of the Earths’s troposphere (I take their word for that) and thus offers an exceptional view (literally) of the skies at night.
